Monastery Tour of Rhodes (6-7 Hours)
  • Prophet Amos in Faliraki
  • Panagia Tsambika
  • Panagia Ipseni in Lardos
  • Tharri in Laerma
A religious tour of Rhodes, visiting some of the most known monasteries on the island. Starting in the morning we will visit the following 4 Monasteries:
  • Prophet Amos in Faliraki
Prophet Amos Monastery is located 14 km from Rhodes, near Faliraki. A beautiful little walkway from Anthony Quin Bay leads to Prophet Amos. The Prophet Amos lived 800 years before the birth of Christ and was the father of Prophet Isaiah. According to tradition, Prophet Elias, whose monastery was at the top of the mountain, quarreled with Amos and threw a rock to destroy the monastery in question. But Amos stopped the rock by piercing him. It is said that this rock survives on the back of the monastery. The temple of Prophet Amos is built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica (5th-6th century AD) and bears fragments of frescoes from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine times. The monastery complex with its temple and enclosure was built in 1838. The monastery celebrations are on June the 14th.
  •  Panagia Tsambika
The Monastery of Panagia Tsambika is located about 25 km south of Rhodes town. The old monastery of Tsambika is built on top of a hill and has a spectacular view to the sea and the surrounding area. The new church, where the holy icon is kept, is on the main road on the way to Lindos. The name of the monastery comes from the word tsamba, which means spark in the local dialect. Tradition says that a local shepherd followed a vigil light and found an icon of Virgin Mary on top of the cliff, where the old Byzantine church is built. The icon of Panagia Tsambika is considered miraculous, particularly for women facing difficulties in conceiving, which is why many women make offers to the icon of Panagia (child wax-dolls). Panagia Tsambika is the protector of the island and many locals are named Tsambikos (men) and Tsambika (women).
  •  Panagia Ipseni in Lardos
The Holy Monastery of "Ipsos" (height) or Ipseni, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries on the island, as archaeological finds attest to its existence in the early Christian times. Panagia Ipseni monastery is situated in a forested mountain, close to Lardos village, about 50km south of Rhodes town. The founder of the present monastery is Saint Meletios who born in nearby Lardos village. He miraculously found an icon after he saw a beam of light from the sky pointing to the roots of an olive tree. There he found buried in the ground the Panagia Ipseni icon. While he was praying Panagia Ipseni appeared and she asked him to rebuild the monastery and name it after her. In another vision he saw where a hidden treasure was buried, so in 1839 he began rebuilding the church. In the Monastery, which is inhabited by nuns, apart from the holy icon of Panagia Ipseni are also the holy relics of Saint Meletios.
  •  Tharri in Laerma
The Monastery is located close to Laerma village and is dedicated to Archangel Michael. Surrounded by pine forests is one of the most visited monasteries on the island. There are various versions for the etymology of the word, three of which are the most prevalent: a) it is pre-Hellenic, like several place names of Rhodes that are usually associated with ancient sites, b) it is an evolution of the word “Lithari” (stone), an interpretation associated with the existence of two megalithic monuments menhir and dolmen to the northwest of the monastery, and c) comes from the ancient verb θαρρῶ / θαρσῶ <θάρρει (Tharri= have courage). Therefore, the scriptures Thari and Tharri are considered to be equally correct depending on the version accepted. The Monastery is Byzantine basilica dated back to the 9th century while the hagiographies and frescoes dating back from the 12th to the 18th century. Close to the building is a fountain with a holy water, which is believed to be the same which healed a Byzantine Princess, who was plagued by a deadly illness. According to tradition in return for her healing, she erected the Monastery. *Tour Program may vary depending on your starting location. Refreshments and lunch may be verified at the spot!
